The Virtual Life – Zoom One Day Retreat

Usually I get to go to SW Virginia for Quilting Retreats twice a year. But, you know, 2020 was definitely NOT a usual year!

Camelia’s 2018 Quilt Retreat – Beautiful Day!

This week I had the joy of participating in a One Day Virtual Sewing Retreat on Zoom hosted by Carole. Carole is a blogger, quilt/sewing pattern designer, crafter and teacher. I have followed her blog – From My Carolina Home for a number of years and have participated in several of her Quilt Alongs.

My Retreat Space

We were a group of 5 bloggers, set up in our own sewing spaces and connected online via Zoom. My computer was set up next to my sewing machine so we could see each other. We spent the day stitching on our projects, chatting and sharing. I think we all felt energized by each other. It was fun to see the faces behind names I have seen online. We live in different states, but were together for the day.

I invite you to check out their blogs and see what they are doing.

I am so surprised at how much I got accomplished. I worked on my January UFO – Wishes 2014 Fat Quarter Shop Charity Quilt Along. My goal is to finish last 3 blocks, sew the final row, and add it to the rows already stitched. The first border is just cream fabric and I will add this. The final border is a checkerboard of 2-1/2″ squares. It won’t get done this month, but I will work on this as leaders & enders while stitching other projects.

I pieced Blocks 10 & 11 last weekend. Block #12 was cut, so my first project for the Zoom Retreat was to piece it. I then added sashing to Blocks 10 & 11 and sewed the final row. Today I will add this row to the rest of the rows.

Final Row Wishes 2014 FQS Charity QAL

Just like an in-person retreat, we took a lunch break and popped in & out as needed. My second project of the day was to work on a Patriotic Quilt. This isn’t exactly an UFO. It was a mystery quilt along that started in October, but I didn’t get it finished before having to finish some sewing for Christmas presents.

My patriotic quilt needed five more star blocks finished, two rows pieced & sashing added and then added to the flimsy.

Star Blocks for Patriotic Quilt

I was able to finish the star blocks, and sew the blocks into two rows. I also got two of the final 3 rows combined with sashing between them. Yesterday I got the last row added and the three rows stitched to the rest of the flimsy. The Blocks & Rows are now completed and I need to add a blue border.

It was so energizing to have a day stitching while connected with others who enjoy the same pastime. There was definitely much accomplished. Until I can attend an in-person retreat, I look forward to another virtual meeting.

Hope you are getting some stitching done.

Happy Stitching!

  2. Carole’s One Day Zoom Retreats are great for making progress on projects! It looks like you got some sewing done. Isn’t that Patriotic quilt that A11 – Under the Starry Sky from Alycia Quilts? She does some really great Mystery Quilts!

Thanks for sharing your “retreat” projects. I do not have anyone to do a virtual retreat. I am still working full time from home and prefer less computer time on weekends. But might try a short time with someone.

Such a great amount accomplished that day!! It was so much fun and nice to meet you Mary Ellen! I am looking forward to the next one we have!

  6. I do love the idea of a virtual retreat.

  7. You got an amazing amount done! Isn’t it nice to be able to sew and focus, but still converse? One of the things I miss about retreats and sew-days with friends is being able to see what everyone is working on. It was fun to see people holding things up to show their accomplishments. I liked the ‘sneak peak’ of the next Scrap Dance colors too.
