Quilting has some fun acronyms. I use several in writing my blog posts. My last post was about my UFO list, and today I will talk about some of my WIPs. So to you not familiar with these abbreviations, here is what they mean:
- UFO – UnFinished Objects
- WIP – Works In Progress
For me the definition of a UFO is a project that has been started, but not finished. This project has been packed away and can be many years old.
(Backing & Extra Fabric are stored in another box).
But on the other hand, I define a WIP is a project that has been started, but not finished and, hopefully, will be worked on more soon. The difference between a UFO and a WIP, is the WIP may be only temporarily set aside. For one example, once I send a Flimsy with Backing to my Longarm Quilter, I still need to finish it, but I am not currently working on it. Also, another WIP may be a project set aside to allow me to work on another project. Maybe the other project is one with a deadline, such as Christmas presents or making a top for a store sample. I intend to return to the WIP soon.
I have finished two WIP so far this month. They were both started in October 2020. There’s that word Finished again. Both are finished to the point they are heading to my Longarm Quilter, but not finished to the point they are totally finished. Makes Sense??
First WIP Finish – Autumn Jubilee 2020 Mystery QAL from Carole at From My Carolina Home Blog. Carole has hosted a Autumn Jubilee in October for the past several years. I’ve been following Carole for some time, but this is the first Autumn Jubilee that I’ve Finished (ok, ok, almost finished). I will be so happy when this comes back quilted so I can bind & label it. This will be the first quilt I’ve made that will be on our bed. Sooooo Excited!!!!
Heading to Longarm Quilter
The Autumn Jubilee 2020 quilt without borders measured about 52″ x 61″ and she gave instructions for the pieced border and suggested a 5″ final border. I added 2 extra borders to fit on our Queen-size bed. My quilt is approximately 83″ x 91″ before quilting.
Another blog that I follow is hosted by Alycia at Alycia Quilts. She is a Longarm Quilter, Quilt Designer and hosts Mystery Quilt Alongs designed to meet the needs of Quilts of Valor. I have followed Alycia for a while and always have good intentions to make her Mystery Quilts. I actually have an older one in progress as a UFO. But this one was begun in October and I was mostly able to keep up. The star blocks slowed me down and I had to take a break in November/December to work on Christmas sewing and Autumn Jubilee 2020.
Mystery QOV QAL/October 2020
Lots of HSTs (Half Square Triangles) in the 9-Patch Stars. So while working on other projects I used these squares as Leaders/Enders. I was able to finish the Blocks & Rows during the Zoom Retreat I wrote about in my post Here.
Mystery QAL
I don’t have suitable fabric for the backing, so will have to order some before this one goes to the Longarm Quilter.
I want to make 2 pillowcases for Autumn Jubilee 2020 and 1 for the Patriotic quilt. But those aren’t started yet. I may get to these while the tops are being quilted.
I will probably write about my OMGs (One Monthly Goal) soon and sometime in the future I may write a post about my PIGs (Projects In Grocery bags).
Happy Stitching!

Love both of those quilts ! I resisted the urge to make a UFO list this year, as it makes me feel pressured! Good for you getting those WIPS moved to the front of the line. I love the way the 9 patch QOV came together.
