I can now share some of the tops I’ve made this year for Fabric Cafe. Donna and Fran have been busy creating new patterns for their new book – Quilts on the Double. As both pattern tester and sample top maker, I’ve enjoyed seeing these quilts come alive. But I’ve had to keep them a secret. Until now!

In case you are wondering, there is a lot of work before these books are released. I got into the process after Donna and Fran had already spent days/weeks/months working on patterns, instructions, layout, fabric selection, etc. I think I have the part that is the most fun – making the quilt top.
These are the 8 quilt patterns found in Quilts on the Double:
- Balance – 44.5 x 57 inches (113.03 x 144.78 cm)
- Broad Strokes – 45 x 59 inches (114.3 x 149.86 cm)
- Dancing Bears – 41 x 59 inches (104.14 x 149.86 cm)
- Engagement – 41 x 59 inches (104.14 x 149.86 cm)
- Louvers – 43.5 x 61.5 inches (110.49 x 156.21 cm)
- Perfect Match – 41 x 60 inches (104.14.38 x 152.4 cm)
- Ribbons – 45 x 58 inches (114.3 x 147.32 cm)
- Stellar – 45 x 57 inches (114.3 x 144.78 cm)
These sizes are made with 1 yard each of 3 fabrics. But if you want something larger, the book gives directions for making a Twin with 2 yards each of 3 fabrics, or Queen/King with 4 yards each of 3 fabrics.
I made 7 out of the 8 quilt tops that are in this book.
Balance (By Fran) – looking like some toy blocks stacked and staggered, this quilt works up quickly with strip piecing. Put dinner in the Slow Pot and you can have this top done in a day.
Broad Strokes (By Donna) – this fabric is gorgeous! The large print poinsettias stand out in the large block and strip piecing makes the second block a snap to make.
Engagement (By Donna) – This quilt used some of Donna’s fabric by Quilting Treasures. She’s done it again with beautiful colors and designs.
Louvers (By Fran) – It looks like looking through the window and the large print design just pops.
Perfect Match (By Fran) – Making just one block, but flipping it, then adding sashing and poof! You have a quilt top!
Ribbons (By Fran) – Have you ever watched the gymnasts doing their routine while twirling a ribbon? This pattern reminds me of those ribbons. This top is not as easy as the others, but don’t let it intimidate you. There are a number of different units so I used lots of Post-it Notes to help keep the pieces straight and took it one step at a time. You’ll be happy with the results.
Stellar (By Donna) – Do you like stars? This pattern alternates star blocks with a large block highlighting a large print fabric.
Check out this YouTube video sharing the quilts that are included in the new book – Quilts on the Double by Donna Robertson & Fran Morgan from Fabric Cafe.
I hope you’ve seen something you like. If you choose to buy the book, put a note in the comment section that you saw it here and ask Donna or Fran to autograph it for you. đŸ™‚
Happy Stitching,
Quilt Mouse

WOW, you have been busy!! I just spent time watching the video on You Tube and flipping back to your blog photos to see the ones you made and to zoom in on the fabrics. The tops are fantastic and so are the fabrics you used. Curious, did they provide you the fabric to test the pattern? Are your quilts actually the ones photographed for the book & video? If so, I hope you get credit!! They do look like fairly straight forward projects that a “new” quilter could accomplish. Thanks for sharing.
